Based on the minimum requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, 1033 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, 2003 Edition
Requirements:

Candidates shall be at least 18 years of age.

For certification at Fire Investigator Level, the Candidate Shall meet the competencies for the First Responder at the Awareness level, of NFPA 472, Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents certified by the Louisiana Firefighter Certification Program.

The Fire Investigator examination includes portions of seven (7) fire related subjects requiring the successful completion of cognitive (written) skill and manipulative (practical) skills. Written examinations require 70% or greater overall average and manipulative skill examinations are averaged together with the student receiving the grade of "P" for passing if successful.
